Changes to the way the speaking module of the IELTS test is marked are due shortly. Currently, candidates’ pronunciation abilities are measured using a four-band scale. From 1 August 2008, this will change to a nine-band scale. There will be no specific changes to the format of the test, but pronunciation will become more important in the overall speaking score. So, if you are taking the IELTS test after this date, best consider your pronunciation. Don’t go overboard though – in our experience candidates that try too hard to show how good their pronunciation is can actually begin to sound unnatural, and this ultimately lowers their score. The IELTS test is a test of English accuracy. Although many people may be very conversant in daily life, the accuracy of their language often needs attention. In the IELTS test, a sentence with basic grammatical mistakes could be considered as example of inability by an examiner. This is especially true in the speaking test where candidates often forfeit accuracy for quantity in a bid to impress the examiner. |

People studying for the IELTS test often answer “yes” when they’re are asked if they have read the instructions carefully in the listening part of the IELTS test. However, in the real-test situation, many people don’t - or at least don’t do it carefully. |
